BBC North

Media City UK at Salford Quays is an innovative hub for the media and creative industries, and the new home of BBC North. Wilkinson Eyre has designed a series of buildings within the Media City masterplan which will set the standard for future development on the site and provide 42,000sqm of accommodation. Our approach has been to acknowledge the importance of the location, and in particular the Lowry Centre and Imperial Museum North on the adjacent banks of the Manchester Ship Canal. In contrast to the visual complexity of these buildings, the Media City offices take a simple form, providing both flexibility and transparency for the activities within. The waterside façade follows the gentle curve of the canal and picks up on the horizontality of the setting, using a striking pattern of sun-shading louvers and a slender, projecting roof, both of which will pick up reflections in the water.
