Beijing, China

Beiyuan is a mixed-use development of 360,000m² adjacent to a rail-bus interchange in a suburb of Beijing, comprising office, retail and residential elements. The site and the adjacent transport interchange were masterplanned by WilkinsonEyre, before completing the detail design for the multi-phase development, which arranges six 100m SOHO and residential towers around the flowing forms of the five-storey retail mall.

The retail mall is designed as two fluid forms, one for the shopping mall and IMAX cinema, and the other for the department store, which are joined together by a sweeping glass fronted entrance space.

Atria punch through each of the retail forms to allow daylight to enter the spaces below. A 100m high office tower provides 37,000m² of Grade A office space and is linked by a glazed bridge leading back to the mall.
