Wuhan Tianhe Airport
Wilkinson Eyre prepared proposals for the design of the new Terminal 3 building at Wuhan Tianhe International Airport as part of an invited design competition. The new 220,000sqm terminal will allow for the predicted future growth of air traffic through Wuhan, China’s most populous city, over the next 20 years, allowing for a peak predicted passenger volume of 42 million per annum.
A 340m long concourse building - ‘the concourse wing’ - connects to the new terminal building, providing airside retail, F&B and lounge facilities for international and domestic passengers with panoramic views of the aircraft. Three piers connect to the concourse wing and provide access to 41 fixed gates (28 stands for domestic use and 13 for international use) with direct connection to the aircraft. The terminal itself has a wing-like form, sheltered by an elegant curving roof conceived as a series of twisting planes or ‘blades’ which span the full width of the terminal and allow light deep into the space.
