Queen Mary, University of London: Mathematical Sciences
This project continues Wilkinson Eyre’s relationship with Queen Mary following our work on the design of a new Humanities Building. The scheme will create a new entrance lobby and social/study space for the School of Maths along with the refurbishment of a lecture theatre. The existing Maths building, constructed in 1967, is a prominent landmark on the Mile End Road at the western end of the campus.
The new entrance will introduce coherence at street level and encourage pedestrian movement into the campus. It takes the form of a single storey structure clad with glass rainscreen panels, the form of which has been generated by a Penrose tiling pattern – a narrative response to the academic school, where Sir Roger Penrose is a visiting professor. As well as creating the geometry of the form, a smaller scale subset of Penrose tiling is also applied to each glass panel as a graphic pattern.
