Paradise Street Interchange

Liverpool, UK

Liverpool's Paradise Street Development Area, Liverpool One, forms a key part of the city's regeneration. The new developments have created an enhanced public realm and a series of exciting new leisure, retail and interchange facilities. They have improved pedestrian and transport links between the city centre and the new Arena and Convention Centre at King's Waterfront – also designed by WilkinsonEyre.

Among the first elements to be completed within the development were WilkinsonEyre's transport interchange, car park and pedestrian link bridge to the southern end of the site. These provide the logistical anchor to the development, their design helping to reinforce new routes between the riverfront and the heart of Paradise Street, with the spaces between each building in the composition becoming almost as important as the volumes themselves.

The car park design is refined to the simplest and most efficient of layouts: a stack of orthogonal parking floor plates with pedestrian bridge, ramps, lifts and other services plugged into the façades. A varied and innovative palette of robust materials gives character and interest. The movement of vehicles and pedestrians inside is celebrated with the addition of a translucent fibreglass screen to the west elevation. Nearby, the bus station is signalled by two elegantly twisting, timber-lined canopies that geometrically reference the shape of a ship's hull in response to the location, which is on the site of the original Liverpool Old Dock.

The pedestrian bridge was WilkinsonEyre's final project in the Paradise Street development, and links the car park with a major department store building. It provides an enclosed link for pedestrians between the two, offering a dramatic and contemporary entrance experience for shoppers. The bridge is constructed from fabricated steel plate and is extensively glazed, the materials emphasising its folded geometric form. Careful lighting design enhances the geometry with the bridge appearing to glow by night.
