John Madejski Academy
The first of the DfES secondary school exemplar designs to be built in the UK, Wilkinson Eyre’s kit-of-parts prototype design has here been modified and developed to suit the specific curriculum demands of a new Academy with a sports specialism. Three wedge-shaped learning clusters sit into the corner of the site, linked by bridges at first floor level and surrounding a central agora space. They contain the majority of teaching space – configured here on a non-departmental basis with each cluster acting as a house base for up to 300 students. The fourth cluster is more open plan and contains the Learning Resource Centre and more adult and vocational activities. Sporting facilities include a Sports Hall designed to Sport England county standard and a number of external pitches.
