Hacking Ferry Bridge
This bridge is proposed for the confluence of the Ribble with the River Calder at Great Mitton. The design consists of three 45m legs linking opposing banks of the Ribble and a central spit of land separating the two rivers. The steep legs of the thrust-arch tripod form a high river crossing with its apex above the turbulent water of the confluence. The deck is necessarily steep to effect both structural stability and to provide sufficient clearance to substantial seasonal floodwaters. The design is a simple expression of form and function, a geometrically pure man-made intervention in a remote rural environment. Due the remote nature of the site, the structure is designed to be delivered by a helicopter, so that the lightweight GRP former can be assembled off-site, fixed to pre-constructed foundations and filled with mass concrete in-situ.
