Guangzhou Velodrome
These proposals for a new Velodrome in Guangzhou were developed as part of an international design competition. The island site is masterplanned around a central lake and green landscaped heart, and will eventually host 10 university campuses with a population of over 150,000 students. Lying within the ‘Sports and Information Zone’, our design has been inspired by the concentric rings of ripples caused by raindrops or stones falling into still water. The form relates to traditional Chinese pavilion structures and sits out into the water of the lake, as the focus of radial ‘ripple’ lines which set out the various key buildings and landscape around it. The roof of the velodrome is a striking saddle shape which appears to float unsupported over the main body of the stadium. Inclined masts support the roof via radial cables, appearing in plan like the spokes of a bicycle wheel.
