Gatwick Pier 6 Connector

The Pier 6 Connector is a project delivered off-framework for BAA at London Gatwick airport, connecting the North Terminal to a new satellite serving stand previously serviced by buses across the taxi apron. The 197m long bridge link provides for flow-separated passenger movement and is the first such structure outside the US to span a live taxiway. The bridge is composed of 2 decks cantilevered transversely from a central spine truss. The shallow arch profile allows visibility of the north terminal stands and runway from the VCT beyond. Each deck accommodates fixed and travelator paths, allowing for mid-span passenger viewing of taxiing aircraft passing beneath. The bridge is a major landmark for Gatwick, providing passengers with a strong reference point in an airport lacking visual cohesion due to continual expansion. It was prefabricated to a tight schedule on the airfield edge to enable swift installation and minimal disruption to airport traffic.
