Arundel Great Court

London, UK

This project is for the redevelopment of a city block on the Strand in central London, on a site close to a number of important listed buildings including Somerset House and St Mary-le-Strand Church. The site is currently occupied by a perimeter block which has few active frontages onto the surrounding streets, and private central courtyard. The masterplan aims to create permeability within the block as well as introducing a new mix of uses, including a large office building (to be designed by WilkinsonEyre) as well as a hotel and residential and retail units.

A careful analysis of context has led to the establishment of a potential volume for the new building, which responds to the historic cityscape of the Strand and introduces a new central courtyard and public rooftop restaurant. A ‘twisted’ layer of accommodation at the upper levels creates a dynamic building form, and a new point of urban prominence at the north-east corner of the site, addressing the Royal Courts of Justice and Fleet Street.
