Apraksin Dvor is a central St Petersburg market district of some 14 hectares, comprising a series of under-used and decaying 19th Century buildings. As winners of the international competition to redevelop the site with developers Glavstroy, Wilkinson Eyre have developed a conceptual masterplan which will retain the qualities of this historic part of the city and regenerate it with new life and activities. All the important historic buildings will be kept, refurbished and given new uses. A new heart will be created in the central area which will provide public open space under a new glazed roof. This will be a major attraction where people can meet, shop, eat and be entertained. Fashionable new shops, cafés, restaurants and hotels will open on to this remarkable new space, sheltered from St Petersburg’s hostile climate by a huge crystalline glass tensegrity roof.
