Apraksin Dvor Masterplan

St Petersburg, Russia

Apraksin Dvor is a central St Petersburg market district of some 14 hectares, comprising a series of under-used and decaying 19th Century buildings. As winners of the international competition to redevelop the site with developers Glavstroy, Wilkinson Eyre Architects has developed a conceptual masterplan which will retain the qualities of this historic part of the city and regenerate it with new life and activities. All the important historic buildings will be kept, refurbished and given new uses.

A new heart will be created in the central area which will provide public open space under a new glazed roof. This will be a major attraction where people can meet, shop, eat and be entertained. Fashionable new shops, cafés, restaurants and hotels will open on to this remarkable new covered spacewhich will be extensively landscaped whilst protected from St. Petersburg's hostile climate. The huge crystalline glass tensegrity roof will be unique and will imbue the space with delicate lightness and changing light reflecting the weather, the time of day and the seasons.
