20 Blackfriars Road
Wilkinson Eyre was involved in the redevelopment of this site on a major route into the City of London for a number of years. The latest proposals, given planning consent in March 2009, combined a 23 storey building containing 18,000sqm of commercial office space with a 42 storey 286 unit residential building and new public square. The mixed use nature of the site allowed us to combine the energy strategy of the two towers, with heat rejection from the commercial building used to supplement the heat requirements of the residential units. The towers respond to the wider cityscape, the form derived from the site’s relationship to important landmarks across London.
An earlier scheme for the site took the form of a single office building, its elegant form ‘cinched’ at its waist to create an elegant structure among a new cluster of towers planned for the southern end of Blackfriars Bridge.
